Education The library

We are convinced of the importance of access to books, for the development of the society and children's possibility to continue with their studies. We want to focus on encouraging the language on broader levels, arouse curiosity and offer possibilities to development by reading, listening and writing.
The purpose of the library project is to awaken the child's and youth's desire to read both for pleasure and obtaining some knowledge.

ABOUT THE PROJECT

Our goal is to give access to a varied and age-appropriate reading material that can spark the interest, develop the language and vocabulary, to have a positive connotation and give new perspectives and perceptiveness. Most of the households do not own books. For that reason, the library's and the school's adults play a crucial part for the children's reading habits.

The libraries offer a good and stimulating environment with books that "open up worlds", where children will be able to seek knowledge and identity. By our libraries we want to spread the idea to other schools and show that even a little and relatively simple library can mean a lot to stimulate a love for reading and increase language training. Ve are convinced that the importance of the access to books will encourage the childrens to continue with their studies. We want to focus on encouraging the language on broader levels, arouse curiosity and offer possibilities to development by reading, listening and writing.

School library

The school of the village is a school with reading assignments. All the children have a book they chose by themselves so they can read for the sheer pleasure of it, not just books where they have to answer some questions and use to study for exams. The teachers are encouraged to read and borrow books. Books must be something evident. That's why there are always viewable books in the classroom, accessible to children. At the pre-school and school in Nakamtenga the oral reading is a compulsory assignment on a daily basis for every group. Vi are using advanced reading strategies that the children can have use of for the rest of their lives. Daily reading stimulates the linguistic development and inspires to write on their own.

Strategy

Our focus is on finding books written and illustrated by people from the region where the library is located. so that the children can identify themselves in the pictures and be able to refer to their own reality by the stories they read. Our priority is non-fiction books associated with the schooling. The teachers responsible in the library are there in place to supervise the visitors on choice of books and how they should deal with with them for a longer lasting.

Activities

In the library the youths have a quiet place to do their homework and a possibility to get help with their assignments (Many youths in the area can not afford buying their own textbooks, which aggravates the possibility to do their homeworks) but even to read for the sake of "travelling" through life and around the world. We have the saturday matinee film for the youngest children and film evenings for the older ones. We are having a dream about organizing book clubs, arranging edit-a-thons, and illustration workshops with native and international writers. And also organizing courses for various craftmanships, both traditional and innovative.
